Sylvester Ndumbi is an award-winning filmmaker and content creator with over 15 years of professional experience. Trained in Hollywood, he has produced an array of documentaries, short films, and commercial projects for Canadian broadcasters, Fortune 500 companies, academic institutions, government organizations, and businesses. His ability to craft compelling narratives has earned him recognition in the film industry, making him a sought-after producer and director.
His notable works include Without Leaving Anyone Behind (2023) and Pipeline Wars: A Burning Debate About Our Future (2014), both of which address critical social issues. He also produced and licensed over 100 episodes of The African Family to Rogers OMNI Television, highlighting diverse perspectives within African communities. In 2022, he was selected by Netflix for its Diversity of Voices program at the Banff World Media Festival.
The Journey to a Meaningful Career
Originally from Lusaka, Zambia, Sylvester made Calgary his home where he attended Mount Royal, where he studied Business Administration. Sylvester continued to pursue his passion and his journey in filmmaking was further solidified when he became one of only 15 filmmakers chosen for the Alberta Accelerated Producer’s Program. During this experience, he received mentorship from top industry executives at Warner Brothers and Entertainment One. He also completed the Calgary Film Centre’s Producer Accelerator Program, helping him refine his craft and expand his influence in the industry.
Beyond his formal training, Sylvester’s career has been shaped by a drive to create meaningful content that amplifies underrepresented voices. Through his production company, Simba Creative, he is dedicated to producing high-quality visual content that informs, educates, and inspires audiences.
Giving Back Through Leadership and Advocacy
In addition to his filmmaking career, Sylvester is deeply committed to supporting the arts community. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA), where he plays a key role in ensuring that artists and creatives have access to the resources they need to thrive.
