The personal information requested on this website is collected under the authority of Section 33(c) of the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) for the purpose of administering alumni and development programs. The information collected will be used to update your records in our office. Mount Royal is committed to the protection of privacy and confidentiality of the MRU community. The purpose of data collection is directly related to the need of Mount Royal to administer the institution / alumni relationship.

An individual's academic record, credential awarded, graduation status, contact information and information regarding non-academic campus activities, are collected by University Advancement for the purposes of: determining alumni status and Alumni Association membership eligibility; communicating information on alumni programming, services and benefits; fundraising; and to inform market research, data analysis and planning. An individual’s contact information may also be shared with other third parties such as a mailing house service, in accordance with confidentiality agreements, to facilitate the communication of alumni benefits and promotions.

What is FOIP?

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act is Provincial legislation that has three parts:

  1. Freedom of Information or Part 1 of the Act provides people with a right-of-access to records in the custody or control of public bodies, including access to their own records, subject to specific exceptions set out in the Act. Mount Royal University is a public body under the FOIP Act.

  2. Protection of Privacy or Part 2 of the Act, provides the rules and provisions that control how Mount Royal University may operationally collect, use, and disclose personal information in order to protect the privacy of individuals.

  3. Roles and Powers of Information and Privacy Commissioner and Reviews and Complaints or Part 3 of the Act, outlines the role and powers of the Information and Privacy Commissioner as well as how to pursue reviews and complaints regarding access to information or protection of privacy.

What is CASL?

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) prohibits sending certain commercial electronic messages (CEMs) without first obtaining the recipient's consent. CEMs are any electronic message (e.g. emails, texts), that encourage participation in a commercial activity.

The core activities of the University, including the teaching, learning, scholarship, research and student support operations of the University, are not considered commercial activities. Emails sent in relation to these operations are not CEMs and CASL does not apply to those communications. In addition, CASL contains several exemptions that may apply to certain electronic communications from the University.

What is Records and Information Management (RIM)?

The Mount Royal University Records and Information Management (RIM) program is responsible for providing the systematic control of University business records throughout their entire lifecycle, which includes their creation, receipt, maintenance, use, and final disposition.
