Recess Calgary helps adults take a break

There is a saying that you’re only as old as you feel and MRU alumnus Tyson Bankert has taken that to heart with Recess Calgary.

Also known as “Coach T”, Bankert started Recess Calgary to bring adults together through fun, unstructured play, much like the games played in school yards around the city. (Freeze tag anyone?)

All that is required to participate is a willingness to embrace your inner child, an openness to meet new friends and a desire to try some different exercise options.

“It’s really cool to see the community come and engage and create connections in a fun way, outside of their day-to-day routines,” Bankert says.

Recess Calgary provides moments for adults to take a break from the stresses of everyday life and practice some self-care  something Bankert says is more important these days than ever.

Pivoting its core activities in response to COVID-19, Recess Calgary currently hosts expressive art workshops, like painting games tables for chess or checkers, all while complying with public health guidelines.

“I’m finding other ways to keep momentum going and for people to continue connecting. Hopefully, as things move along (with declining case numbers and vaccine rollouts) there will be opportunities to get out and play again soon,” Bankert says.

Register for expressive art sessions or follow Recess Calgary on Instagram and Facebook for updates on other upcoming activities and events.
